Bird Strikes
Birds and planes share the skies and most of the time this is a friendly relationship. However, once in a while a bird gets in the way of a plane, or you could say, the plane gets in the way of a bird. Either way, the result is assuredly a dead bird and sometimes, a down plane. In September 1995, twelve air people died after their Air Force plane struck a bird. The Air Force estimates that planes hit about 3000 birds a year causing $50 million in damages and an occasional loss of life.

Chicken Cannon
The Bird Impact Test Facility at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee is responsible for making sure that the windshield of a plane can withstand a collision with a bird. How does one simulate a bird impact? The easiest and best way to do an impact test is to accelerate a bird and have it hit a stationary windshield. Yes, a 4-lb chicken carcass is placed in a 60-foot cannon and shot into a test windshield.
