Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

Knoxville, Tennessee and Los New Yorks

Reread “Knoxville, Tennessee” and “Los New Yorks.” Pay attention to how the writers of these poems vividly and personally describe a place. For example, “Knoxville, Tennessee” lists the things that the speaker likes about summer in her town. For this activity, pick a place that you like and write a poem about it. Begin your poem with the words that Nikki Giovanni uses: “I always like_________” and fill in your own words. When you are finished, read your poem out loud to a partner.
