Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

Travel

The poem “Travel” uses a specific rhyme scheme. A rhyme scheme is the way that the final words of the different lines of a poem rhyme. In “Travel,” the first line of each stanza rhymes with the third line, and the second line rhymes with the fourth line.

For this activity, compose four lines in which the first and second line rhyme and the second and fourth line rhyme. First, choose the rhyming pairs of words that rhyme Next, compose the poem using those words on any topic you choose. Here’s an example:

When summer comes I want to run
And sing and dance and laugh and play.
A few short months of silly fun
Then studying returns without delay.
