Who Can Be Born Black and Saying Yes

In “Who Can Be Born Black,” the speaker celebrates her African American heritage. In “Saying Yes,” the speaker wants to be accepted for her dual heritage. Ask yourself two questions: First, how do you define your heritage? Second, how does your heritage define you? Use the answers to these questions to write a poem about your relationship to your heritage.
