Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.Barbara Frietchie

“Barbara Frietchie” is written in “rhymed couplets.” Rhymed couplets are pairs of lines whose last words rhyme with each other. Here’s an example from the poem:

Over Barbara Frietchie’s grave,
Flag of Freedom and Union, wave!

For this activity, write two sets of rhymed couplets (four lines) about someone you know. They can describe anything about the person: how he or she looks, acts, or speaks, or how you feel about the person. Make sure that the final words of each couplet rhyme. When you are finished, read your couplets out loud to a partner.
