The People Could Fly

The African peoples who were sold and sent to America brought with them a rich tradition of folktales. These imaginative stories adapted over time to reflect the hard labor on the plantations. “The People Could Fly” is a folktale from the African tradition that expresses the people’s intense longing for freedom.

Think about an event or situation in your own life that you could express as a folktale. Choose a topic to which you have a strong emotional connection. Once you have chosen a topic, select the characters and the setting for your folktale. Then create a brief outline for your story, identifying the story’s beginning, middle, and end. As you write, refer to your outline but accept that some details may change as the story develops.
