Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

Satchel Paige

In the “Before You Read” section of your textbook, you learned about point of view, the relationship of the narrator to the story. “Satchel Paige” is an essay, and it is written from an omniscient point of view. For this exercise, rewrite the beginning of the essay in the first-person point of view. Imagine that you are Satchel Paige, walking out to the mound in Cleveland. Describe what you see and how you feel. When you are finished, share your story with a partner. How is hearing the story in the first-person point of view different from hearing it in the third-person point of view?
