Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

The Open Boat

When you interpret a work of literature, you consider the theme, or author’s message, and the literary elements that he or she uses to convey that message. For example, an author may use setting, imagery, mood, and conflict to convey his or her themes and ideas. Write a paragraph examining Stephen Crane’s use of one of these elements and its significance to the story. Include specific examples from the story as well as your own commentary on these examples.
