Objective
  • To shop for apparel and gifts in Spanish-speaking countries
  • To ask for the quantities and sizes you want
  • To find out prices
  • To talk about different types of past actions
  • To talk in general terms about what is done
  • To talk about shopping practices in Spanish-speaking countries

Notes

  • You may wish to brainstorm with students keywords in Spanish that will help direct them to Spanish-language Web sites to complete this WebQuest.
  • You may also wish to provide students with the following list of vocabulary words before they begin the activity.
 el arregloarrangement
 la canastabasket
 contienecontains
 el hogar home
 los juguetestoys
 el menajehousehold furniture
 el pedidoorder

  • Encourage students to use both the preterite and the imperfect tenses as they complete the Después de navegar section of the worksheet.
  • Remind students that the prices on the Web sites are not in dollars. Tell students that the sites are from Spain and that the prices are quoted in euros.

Expansion

  • Have students invent a store for one of the categories listed in the store directories of the sites they just visited. Have them promote their business by creating a print advertisement or a Web page in Spanish similar to those they visited during this activity. Encourage students to consider ways to appeal to the wants and needs of potential clients as they create their ads. You may wish to have them read the article on El mercadeo in the Conexiones section on pages 114-115 of the textbook.
  • Have students role-play a dialogue that might take place between the store clerks and themselves as they attempt to purchase one of the items on their lists.
  • Have students role-play a conversation that might take place between themselves and the client as the client inspects the various items that the employee has purchased. Have students explain to the client why they chose each item and recount an experience that illustrates why they were not able to buy a specific item that the client requested. Have students bring their own baskets of props for this activity.
  • After students have completed the Después de navegar section of the worksheet, have them role-play a conversation that might take place between them and their bosses if they were to give their reports over the telephone instead of via e-mail.
  • Have students convert the prices of the items bought in the Tercera parte: De compras - La canasta section into U.S. dollars. Divide the class into groups and have them compare prices of similar items in the United States. Tell students to use an online currency converter to make the conversions.
  • Have students prepare gift baskets for the other three clientes listed on the activity page.
