Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

To Captain John Smith

In this letter, Powhatan asks John Smith to treat his people and his land fairly. He speaks clearly and simply and uses a strong paragraph structure. For this exercise, write a return letter to Powhatan from John Smith. Give it the same structure as Powhatan’s letter. Make it four paragraphs long, using each paragraph to tell who you are, what you want to know, what you know, and what you want. When you are finished, share your letter with a partner.
