Fitness That Fits

Introduction
Finding a sport or fitness activity is a personal choice. Not everyone enjoys contact or team sports, and not all bodies are designed to handle the same kinds or levels of activity. The Web site below discusses what to do if you do not particularly like sports. It also has a link to a Web site where you can learn about all kinds of fitness activities
Link to explore: BAM: http://www.bam.gov/index.html

Instructions

  • Start at the BAM (Body and Mind) Web site and click on the Physical Activity button.
  • Find the link on the bottom of the page “Go for Activities You Like to Do” and take the quick quiz. Then explore the BAM site -- find descriptions of a wide range of fitness activities under the link, “Activity Cards.” Check them out and take notes as you read.
  • When you are done, answer the questions below.
  • Finally, using the information from the link, create a list and brief descriptions of six fitness activities that teens, including those who do not like sports, might enjoy.

1
What types of physical activities do you think you’d like to try?
2
What does your personality profile say about your physical activity favorites?
3
List some sports that would be good for teens who do not enjoy team sports.
4
Based on what you learned about yoga on the BAM Web site, why would it be a good alternative to fast-paced team sports?
5
Based on what you learned about snorkeling on the BAM Web site, why would this sport appeal to people who like the water but don’t enjoy competitive sports like racing or springboard diving?
