Introduction
In this chapter students have studied the events in America from 1824 to 1845. It was during this time that the Congress and President Jackson formed some of the first official policies toward the treatment of Native Americans. In 1834 the Indian Territory was established, and by 1838 the army was forcibly moving Native Americans westward. In this activity students will take a closer look at the journey of the Cherokee people to a reservation in Oklahoma, a journey known as the Trail of Tears.

Lesson Description
In this lesson students will visit a Web site devoted to the Trail of Tears. They will study a time line of events and a painting of the Trail of Tears. After answering questions about the time line, they will choose one of the figures in the painting and write a journal entry.

Instructional Objectives
  1. The learner will be able to interpret information from a time line.
  2. The learner will identify significant events related to the Trail of Tears.
  3. The learner will write a creative journal entry based on a figure in the painting of the Trail of Tears.
