Introduction
In this chapter students read about the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. Those who volunteer to help in their own communities or in others help improve the quality of life for all. One important source for organizing volunteers is the USA Freedom Corps. This group includes the Peace Corps, Senior Corps, and AmeriCorps. It can also direct citizens to important volunteer efforts within their own communities. In this activity students will take a closer look at these volunteer organizations.

Lesson Description
Students will visit the Web site for the USA Freedom Corps. They will read about volunteer opportunities throughout the United States and around the world. By entering their zip code they can access a list of volunteer opportunities within their own communities. After browsing the site students will answer questions and create a poster for a volunteer opportunity.

Instructional Objectives

  1. The learner will be able to describe the Peace Corps program.
  2. The learner will be able to investigate a volunteer opportunity within his/her community.
  3. The learner will be able to create a poster advertising a volunteer program.

Student Web Activity Answers

  1. A Peace Corps volunteer must be at least 18 years old.
  2. There are currently over 7,000 Peace Corps volunteers.
  3. 72 countries are currently being served by Peace Corps volunteers.
  4. Education: 34%, Environment: 16%, Health: 20%, Business: 16%, Agriculture: 6%
  5. Students' posters will vary.
