U.S. Consumer Product Safety

When you purchase goods like dishwashing liquid or light bulbs from your local grocery store, you probably assume they are safe and effective. Many products, though, are found to be unsafe after they are released to the public. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission works to protect consumers from risks of injury or death from any of the thousands of products under its charge.

Start at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Web site. Record your answers to these questions separately.

  1. List the items in the Recent Recall section. Click on one of the items and read the recall notice. What hazard is described for the product?
  2. Return to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission home page. Click on the tab labeled About CPSC at the top of the page. What annual cost is associated with deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer products?
  3. Why do you think it is important for consumers to report any unsafe products to this agency?
  4. Return to the home page. Click Recalls and Product Safety News. Under Product Category, click Household products. Select one recall item and review the alert bulletin. Describe the product, hazard, and any incidents or injuries associated with the product.
