Mars Rovers

Introduction:

The Opportunity rover in Meridiani Planum discovered round concretions, called “blueberries,” which indicate that water may once have existed on the surface of Mars. The rover confirmed that the concretions were hematite deposits. The fact that the hematite was deposited on top of other features suggests that it was deposited in a standing body of water. In this unit project, your task will be to design a blueprint of your own Mars rover.

Task:

In small groups, you will need to research the Mars rovers. Your group may design blueprints of an electronic robot including remote controls and the capability to move, scoop, and retrieve. Actual working models may be possible using donated and recycled materials.

Time:

2 class periods to complete the research and 1 class period to design a blueprint.
