WHIMSICAL SANDWICH PAINTING

Using tempera or acrylic, paint a picture of a large, whimsical sandwich seen from the side. Your creation will include items that are not the kinds of things one might be expected to find in a sandwich. Your sandwich will be as unusual and whimsical as your imagination allows.

INSPIRATION

Examine the two-dimensional works illustrated in this chapter and throughout the book. Notice that the subjects in these works range from those that are realistically represented to others that are based upon images drawn from the artist's imagination.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • Pencil and sketch paper
  • Large sheet of white mat board, 12 x 18 inches
  • Tempera or acrylic paint
  • Brushes, mixing tray, and paint cloth
  • Water container

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  1. Discuss ideas to include in a unique, whimsical sandwich, unlike any sandwich seen in real life. List “ingredients” for such a sandwich on the board. Avoid familiar items in favor of unlikely ingredients such as: an assortment of candy bars items not normally associated with food and eating, such as books, articles of clothing, or tools.
  2. Prepare several sketches of a whimsical sandwich. Show the sandwich from the side in order that five or more items can be more easily shown between two slices of bread or the top and bottom half of a bun. Develop a theme for your sandwich, such as “undersea treasure sandwich”
  3. Transfer your most successful sketch to the mat board making certain to fill the entire sheet with your drawing. Use acrylic or tempera to paint your composition. Light, bright colors should be used for the sandwich and a contrasting dark, dull color for the background.

EVALUATING YOUR WORK

Describe Is your painting easily recognized as a sandwich? Is it seen from the side? Does it contain five or more ingredients? Can these be readily identified?

Analyze Does your sandwich fill the space on which it is painted? Did you use light, bright hues that contrast with the dark, dull background to emphasize the sandwich?

Interpret Does your painting present a highly imaginative version of a sandwich? Are others able to recognize the whimsical nature of your creation?

Judge Do you feel that your painting is successful? Is it successful because it is painted in a realistic style, or because it uses the elements and principles of art to achieve an overall sense of unity?
