The Stage and the School

Chapter 3: Voice and Diction

Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
In this chapter, students have studied proper diction. This self-assessment activity will allow students to improve their diction—pronouncing vowel sounds, plosive consonants, fricative consonants, and nasal consonants—through study and practice.

Directions
Students will play the example of a sound. After listening to the sound and practicing it aloud, students will record their own attempts at pronouncing the sound. Next, the students will play back their voices and compare them against the example voice, checking for proper pronunciations. They will then move on to the subsequent sounds, following the above directions for each, until they have practiced all 36 sounds.

Student Web Activity Answers
This is a self-assessment activity. Students may work alone or with a partner to complete this activity. However, peer review may help students discern between their pronunciations and proper pronunciations. The sounds and examples are found on pages 85 and 88 in the textbook.
