"Embargo"

Introduction
The estranged relationship between the United States and Cuba dates back to the 1960s. In this activity, students will gain an understanding of the embargo's history, hear from its supporters and critics, and learn about the effects of the trade embargo.

Lesson Description
Students will go to the CNN Web site to read about the estranged relationship between the United States and Cuba and the resulting embargo. They will learn about the history of the embargo, hear from its supporters and critics, and learn about the effects of the trade embargo. After visiting the site, students will answer four questions. They will apply what they've learned by creating a list of pros and cons for maintaining the embargo and arguing their position on the embargo in a short essay.

1. Students will describe the history of the embargo and provide information on the controversy surrounding the issue.
2. Students will be able to apply what they have learned by writing an essay detailing their position on the embargo.

2. These organizations believe that the economic stress caused by the embargo leaves Castro with only two choices: reform or leave. Most believe Castro will eventually be forced to leave.

4. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Cuba lost subsidies and its economy suffered.
5. Answers will vary, but students should support their arguments with facts.
