  The lake acts as a closed basin of water. Sketching the first harmonic of a seiche (wave), you can see that at both ends there will be a node.

  With nodes at the ends, one half wavelength fits in the lake. Consequently, one wavelength is twice the length of the lake, 120 mi. To calculate the velocity, use the following equation.
 <a onClick="window.open('/olcweb/cgi/pluginpop.cgi?it=gif::::/sites/dl/free/0078458137/193800/ch15_answer01c.gif','popWin', 'width=NaN,height=NaN,resizable,scrollbars');" href="#"><img valign="absmiddle" height="16" width="16" border="0" src="/olcweb/styles/shared/linkicons/image.gif"> (0.0K)</a>
  This velocity is about 30 mph. If the log were to 'ride' this wave to the far end of the lake, it would take two hours to complete the trip.
