Big Question Overview and Resources

Overview

You encounter advertisements all the time; on TV, in newspapers, online, even on the street signs you can see from the car. So many advertisements make it difficult to make informed decisions. What messages are true? What messages can you trust? Commercials on television and radio try to convince you to do or buy something. Persuasive writing in magazines and newspapers can try to convince you to believe something or to think a certain way. When you look at an advertisement in a magazine or hear a commercial, what draws your attention? Whatever makes you notice the advertisement will probably persuade you to buy the product.

There are other ways that you are influenced. People we know and trust often influence the way we think and act. Is there someone you look up to? This person might influence the way you act, dress, or talk. You may even want to be like that person. Is that always a good idea? Who are some of the people who influence you?
