Web Quest Lesson Plan

Introduction

Students have explored the topic of what makes them tick. In this lesson, they will learn how social injustice can motivate change. Students will read selections from two Web sites, and then they will answer questions based on what they read.

Lesson Description

Students will read selected passages from Stand Up For Your Rights
<www.pbskids.org/wayback/civilrights/index.html> and It's Not Fair! <www.pbskids.org/wayback/fair/index.html> . They will then answer questions on two of the following topics: School Desegregation, Women and the Vote, Religious Freedom, and Child Labor.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will read about issues that motivated people to make important changes.
  2. Students will read about social injustices.
  3. Students will answer questions based on what they read.

Student Web Activity Questions and Possible Answers

Questions for School Desegregation:

1. How did The Little Rock Nine affect the civil rights movement?

Possible Answers: The Little Rock Nine were the first African American students to end segregation at Central High School in Little Rock , Arkansas . Despite protestors and violence, the Little Rock Nine did not give up their mission to end segregation. Thanks to the actions of the Little Rock Nine, students of all races now attend the same schools.

2. Name three civil rights leaders who you read about in this feature.

Possible Answers: Three of the following: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Ralph Abernathy, César Chávez, Dennis Banks, Clyde Bellecourt

3. What happened at the end of Melba Beal's first year at Central High School in Little Rock , Arkansas ?

Possible Answer: Little Rock closed the schools rather than see them desegregated. Melba was out of school for a year while she waited for the Supreme Court to take action. The Ku Klux Klan offered a reward out for her capture. For her safety, Melba moved to California.

Questions for Women and the Right to Vote:

1. During the early 1900s, what was a suffragist?

Possible Answer: A suffragist was someone who wanted the government to grant women the right to vote.

2. After being released from solitary confinement, what did Alice Paul do to protest her jail sentence and the obstacles the suffragists faced?

Answer: Alice Paul went on a hunger strike.

3. Name two ways suffragists peacefully demonstrated for women's right to vote.

Answer: Suffragists picketed at the White House, marched in parades, and introduced an amendment to Congress.

Questions for Religious Freedom:

1. How did Anne Hutchinson's beliefs differ from the beliefs of the Massachusetts Bay Colony?

Answer: Anne Hutchinson believed that people could communicate directly with God, without the help of ministers or the Bible.

2. What was one reason Quakers were singled out for punishment in the Massachusetts Bay Colonies?

Possible Answers: Their religion forbade them from swearing oaths to the government. They refused to serve in the military.

3. What does the first Constitutional Amendment state?

Answer: The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

Questions for Child Labor:

1. Name three jobs that children in the late nineteenth century often performed.

Possible Answers: Children worked in factories and coal mines, sold newspapers, plowed fields, picked cotton, rolled tobacco leaves, and made cloth.

2. How did Mary Harris Jones help the child labor movement?

Possible Answers: Mary Harris Jones walked with a group of children workers from Philadelphia to Theodore Roosevelt's house in New York to ask the president to pass laws against child labor. She helped keep American children in school and out of factories.

3. Why did employers in the late nineteenth century like to hire children?

Possible Answers: It was easier to make children work harder. Employers could pay children less money.
