Chapter 4: THE EMPIRE IN TRANSITION

Essay

1
Explain the role that colonial assemblies played in the American protests of British policies after 1763. Why did the assemblies take such a leading role, and what effect did the British attitude (and action) toward these legislatures have on the American decision to revolt?
2
It has been said that Americans revolted against tyranny anticipated, rather than against tyranny inflicted. Define tyranny as you believe an eighteenth-century American might have, and then assess this point of view.
3
From the outset, Massachusetts was the leader of the anti-British protest studied in this chapter. Why? What factors in the economic, political, and intellectual climate of that colony made it such a hotbed of revolution? What part did Puritanism play in shaping this climate? (Be sure to check previous chapters when preparing your answers.)
