Internet Exercises

1. Using the population data provided in the text or online in the World Population Data Sheet, identify the demographic variables that most aid you in hypothesizing about the level of economic development in a region or country. How great are the differences in key variables between the developed countries and the developing world?

2. Go to the Population Reference Bureau and read one of their reports about HIV/AIDS in a developing country. Are there development-related factors in the country or region that impact on the AIDS epidemic?

3. Using the resources of the United Nations Statistics Division, develop your own aggregate measure of economic development using three or more variables. Then, apply your model to one region of the world and see how it compares to some of the standard aggregate measures. Does your model show the same or different spatial patterns?
